Dimensional Formula of Dipole Moment (Magnetic or Electric)
The dimensional formula of magnetic or electric dipole moment is given by,
[M0 L1 T1 I1]
Where,
- M = Mass
- I = Current
- L = Length
- T = Time
Derivation
Dipole Moment (M) = Charge × Distance . . . . . . (1)
Since, Charge = Electric current × time
∴ The dimensional formula of charge = [M0 L0 I1 T1] . . . . . (2)
The dimensions of distance = [M0 L1 T0] . . . . . (3)
On substituting equation (2), (3) and (4) in equation (1) we get,
Dipole Moment = Charge × Distance
Or, M = [M0 L0 I1 T1]× [M0 L1 T0] = [M0 L1 T1 I1].
Therefore, the magnetic or electric dipole moment is dimensionally represented as [M0 L1 T1 I1].
