NEET 2017 Counselling, 99 out of 100 seats to be left vacant in Christian Medical College, Vellore

The Christian Medical College in Vellore has decided that they will leave 99 out of 100 seats vacant in its MBBS course. The institution in the state of Tamil Nadu sought the rights to select the qualified candidates of NEET 2017 through its own counselling process. It is against the centralized counselling which is set up by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the state government for State Quota and All India Quota respectively.

Tension grew in the state of Tamil Nadu after Anitha, a 17 years old Dalit girl took her life on September 1. The student from Ariyalur had petitioned the Supreme Court of India against the implementation of NEET 2017 in Tamil Nadu. A day after the death of Anitha, protests were held in Chennai on 2nd September by many groups, including the PMK and Left parties. Both the Central and the State government were blamed by the protesters.

This decision can be another hole in the already tensed situation in Tamil Nadu. It can also be a huge disappointment for the students. Christian Medical College in Vellore is a hundred years old minority college that serves over 180 missions across the rural districts of Tamil Nadu.

The principal of the college, Dr Anna Pulimood stated that the institution’s desire to induct aspirants with higher willingness and social understanding. The institution has stated that it has no objection with NEET but it wishes to have the authority to carry out its own counselling process.

However, this move is not backed by the Doctors Association for Social Equality. Dr G R Rabindranath, the Association General Secretary has stated that the action of CMC, Vellore is not the right move as it is not productive to the need of the country.

Christian Medical College, Vellore has got the exception from the Supreme Court. The institution has stated that the Supreme Court has validated the admission process of CMC in the past and it is hoping for a positive verdict. Till that time the college has decided to leave 99 out of 100 seats vacant. The Supreme Court is expected to give the verdict in the month of October.
