Descending Order: Numbers can be arranged from greatest to smallest in descending order. If the items are arranged in order from greater value to lower value, it is referred to as the descending order or the decreasing order. Any data, including numbers, alphabets, amounts, lengths, etc., are arranged in descending order from highest to lowest. It is possible to arrange numbers in descending order, including whole numbers, integers, natural numbers, decimals and fractions. The greater than symbol, “>,” is used to express the descending order of numbers. |
Descending Order Questions with Solutions
How to Compare Two Numbers? Always compare the highest place value number first when comparing numbers, and if they are the same, then compare the following highest place value digit, and so on. For instance, we must compare two numbers, say 6699 and 6685.
This shows that 6699 is greater than 6685. I.e., 6699 > 6685. Also, read: Comparing Numbers. |
1. Arrange the following numbers in descending order and express them using the symbol:
- 58, 69, 108, 99, 111.
- 456, 352, 511, 792, 628
Solution:
As we know, descending order is the arrangement of numbers from the highest to the lowest value. Hence, the descending order of the given numbers is:
(a) Given: 58, 69, 108, 99, 111.
Thus, the descending order of 58, 69, 108, 99, 111 is 111, 108, 99, 69, 58.
Symbolically, it is represented by 111 > 108 > 99 > 69 > 58.
(b) Given: 456, 352, 511, 792, 628.
Hence, the descending order of 456, 352, 511, 792, 628 is 792, 628, 511, 456, 352.
Symbolically, it is expressed as 792 > 628 > 511 > 456 > 352.
2. Arrange the following numbers in descending order using symbolic representation.
- 12, 17, 9, 21, 18.
- 1129, 1001, 1298, 1555.
Solution:
Using symbolic representation, the numbers are arranged in descending order as follows:
- 21 > 18 > 17 > 12 > 9.
- 1555 > 1298 > 1129 > 1001.

3. Arrange the following integers in descending order.
-101, -88, -125, 45, 98, 88.
Solution:
Given numbers: -101, -88, -125, 45, 98, 88.
As we know, the highest number with a negative sign is considered to be the smallest number.
Hence, the descending order of -101, -88, -125, 45, 98, 88 is:
Descending order = 90, 88, 45, -88, -101, -125.
Symbolically, it is represented by 90 > 88 > 45 > -88 > -101 > -125.
4. Rahul has made a list that contains the height of his friends in centimeters as follows: {176, 128, 154, 152, 101}. Arrange the data in descending order. Also, express them symbolically.
Solution:
Given: 176 cm, 128 cm, 154 cm, 152 cm, 101 cm.
As we know, the descending order is the arrangement of numbers from the greatest to the smallest value.
Hence, the descending order of the data in the given list is 176 cm, 154 cm, 152 cm, 128 cm, 101 cm.
Symbolically, it is represented by 176 cm > 154 cm > 152 cm > 128 cm > 101 cm.
5. Arrange the fractions in descending order: 6/5, 2/5, 4/5, 11/5, 7/5.
Solution:
Given fractions: 6/5, 2/5, 4/5, 11/5, 7/5.
In the given fractions, the denominators are the same. Hence, we can compare only the numerators of the given fractions to write them in descending order.
By comparing the numerators, the descending order of the given fractions is given by:
Descending order = 11/5, 7/5, 6/5, 4/5, 2/5.
In symbolic representation, the descending order of 6/5, 2/5, 4/5, 11/5, 7/5 is 11/5 > 7/5 > 6/5 > 4/5 > 2/5.
6. Arrange the given decimals in descending order: 4.5, 2.1, 0, -0.2, -1.1, 3.9.
Solution:
Given decimals: 4.5, 2.1, 0, -0.2, -1.1, 3.9.
Hence, the descending order of the given decimals are 4.5, 3.9, 2.1, 0, -0.2, -1.1.
I.e., 4.5 > 3.9 > 2.1 > 0 > -0.2 > -1.1.
[Note: The number zero (0) is less than all positive numerals, but greater than all negative numerals]
7. Simplify the given expressions and arrange them in descending order:
100 – 25, 100 + 90, 99 + 12, 80 – 20, 140 + 60, 121 – 11.
Solution:
To arrange the given expression in descending order, first simplify the expressions.
Hence, we get
100 – 25 = 75
100 + 90 = 190
99 + 12 = 111
80 – 20 =60
140 + 60 =200
121 – 11 = 110.
Hence, the sequence equivalent to the given expression is 75, 190, 111, 60, 200, 110.
Therefore, the descending order of the above sequence is 200 > 190 > 111 > 110 > 75 > 60.
8. Check whether the given sequence is arranged in descending order. If not, arrange them in descending order.
99, 132, 43, 67, 154, 103.
Solution:
Given sequence: 99, 132, 43, 67, 154, 103.
The given sequence is not arranged in descending order.
To arrange the given sequence in descending order, we have to arrange the values from the largest to the smallest value.
I.e, 154, 132, 103, 99, 67, 43.
9. Arrange the fractions in decreasing order: 5/4, 5/7, 5/2, 5/9, 5/8, 5/3.
Solution:
Given fractions: 5/4, 5/7, 5/2, 5/9, 5/8, 5/3.
As we know, if the numerators of the given fractions are the same, then the fraction that contains the smallest denominator is the greatest value.
Hence, the descending order of given fractions is 5/2 > 5/3 > 5/4 > 5/7 > 5/8 > 5/9.
Another Method:
To find the descending order of the given fractions, first convert the fractional values into decimals.
Hence, the decimal sequence equivalent to the given fractional sequence is 1.25, 0.71, 2.5, 0.56, 0.63, 1.67.
Hence, the descending order is 2.5 > 1.67 > 1.25 > 0.71 > 0.63 > 0.56.
10. Arrange the given mixed fractions in descending order: 2 ½, 4 ½, 3 ⅓, 2 ¼.
Solution:
Given mixed fractions: 2 ½, 4 ½, 3 ⅓, 2 ¼.
To determine the descending order of the given mixed fractions, first, convert the mixed fractions into improper fractions.
Hence, the sequence becomes 5/2, 9/2, 10/3, 9/4.
Therefore, the descending order is 9/2 > 10/3 > 5/2 > 9/4, which is equivalent to 4 ½ > 3 ⅓ > 2 ½ > 2 ¼.
