  1. Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack membrane-bound organelles. Example: bacteria.
  2. All prokaryotes are not harmful. Some of them are extremely beneficial to humans.

Examples of beneficial prokaryotes:

  1. Some prokaryotes form a symbiotic relationship with the plants and help in fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Example: Rhizobium, Frankia.
  2. Streptomyces is a vital source of several antibacterial and antifungal medications.
  3. Lactobacillus acidophilus facilitates digestion and prevents the growth of harmful microorganisms.
  4. Bacteria also play a vital role in decomposition. They break down dead organic matter into simple compounds.
