Are all seed plants homosporous?

Open in App
Solution

Seed:

  1. It is a mature ovule with an embryo and food reserves, all enclosed in a protective seed coat.
  2. Seeds are produced by angiosperms and gymnosperms.
  3. They can be either homosporous or heterosporous.

Spores:

  1. They are single-celled reproductive structures produced by bacteria, certain fungi, and plants (ferns and moss).
  2. They greatly resist extreme environmental conditions, like high temperature, salinity, pH, etc.

Homosporous plants:

  1. Plants that produce one type and one size of spore that further develops into a gametophyte (n).
  2. They have both female and male organs.
  3. Example- Pteridophytes (seedless plants) like Whisk Fern, Dicksonia, Selaginella, etc.
  4. However, some pteridophytes are heterosporous.

Heterosporous plants:

  1. Plants that produce two kinds of spores- male microspore and female megaspore.
  2. All seed plants and some pteridophytes are heterosporous.
  3. Examples of pteridophytes that produce different kinds of spores- are Salvinia and Selaginella.
  4. Examples of heterosporous plants with seeds are pines, mango, conifers, etc.
