Are amino acids basic units of carbohydrates?

Open in App
Solution

Amino acids:

  1. They are organic compounds with amino groups (-NH2) and carboxyl groups (-COOH).
  2. They are building blocks of proteins and linked together via peptide bonds.
  3. Essentially, twenty amino acids are involved in constructing proteins.
  4. Example- lysine, arginine, etc.

Carbohydrates:

  1. They are one of the essential macromolecules that are found in living organisms.
  2. They are the primary energy source in the body.
  3. Example- sugars, fibers, and starch.
  4. Monosaccharides are the building blocks of carbohydrates.
  5. Example- glucose, fructose, mannose, etc.

Therefore, amino acids are building blocks of proteins and not carbohydrates. Monosaccharides are the building blocks of carbohydrates.
