Also known as nerve cells.
Nerve impulses transmit from one neuron to another, through a junction called synapses.
Presynaptic & Postsynaptic neuron:
A neuron that transmits a signal towards a synapse is known as a presynaptic neuron.
A neuron that transmits a signal away from the synapse is referred to as a postsynaptic neuron.
The membranes of pre- & post-synaptic neurons are separated by a space known as the synaptic cleft.
The synaptic cleft is filled with fluid containing neurotransmitter receptors & various other adhesion molecules.
