Are ribosomes RNA?

Open in App
Solution

Ribosomes

  1. Ribonucleic acid (abbreviated RNA) is a nucleic acid present in all living cells that has structural similarities to DNA.
  2. Unlike DNA, however, RNA is most often single-stranded.
  3. An RNA molecule has a backbone made of alternating phosphate groups and the sugar ribose, rather than the deoxyribose found in DNA.
  4. Ribosomes are the particles present in a large number inside cells.
  5. They are found in both prokaryotes (the 70S) and eukaryotes (the 80S), with a comparatively larger size in eukaryotes.
  6. They are the significant sites of protein synthesis.
  7. Ribosomes are made up of RNA and proteins.
