At what age does spermatogenesis end?

Open in App
Solution

Spermatogenesis:

  1. Spermatogenesis refers to the formation of spermatozoa (sperm) from the germ cells (spermatogonia).
  2. It occurs inside the seminiferous tubules of the testis and begins at puberty.
  3. Some spermatogonia named ‘primary spermatocytes’ undergo first meiotic cell division and give rise to ‘secondary spermatocytes’.
  4. These secondary spermatocytes undergo a second meiotic division leading to the formation of spermatids; these spermatids are transformed into sperms.
  5. Spermatogenesis does not end; it continues throughout life.
  6. Testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone regulate the process of spermatogenesis.
