Fruit:

  1. The fruit is the mature or ripened ovary that is developed after fertilisation.
  2. However, parthenocarpic fruit is developed without fertilisation of the ovary.
  3. Fruit is a characteristic feature of the angiosperms.

Structure of the fruit:

  1. A fruit comprises a wall or pericarp and seeds.
  2. The pericarp can be dry (e.g., mustard, nuts) or fleshy (e.g., mango, guava).
  3. When the pericarp is thick and fleshy, it is further differentiated into three layers- epicarp (outer layer), mesocarp (middle layer), and endocarp (inner layer).
  4. The ripened fertilised ovules forms seeds of the fruit.
  5. The integuments surrounding the ovule develops seed coat enclosing the seed.
