  2. Breakdown of glycogen is an immediate source of energy for muscle contraction.
  3. Glycogenolysis occurs in muscles and liver cells (hepatocytes) and is under hormonal control.
  4. This process is regulated by two enzymes, glycogen phosphorylase, and phosphorylase kinase.
