Question

How are new alleles formed?

Open in App
Solution

Alleles:

  1. An allele is one of two or more versions of a DNA sequence (a base or a segment of bases) at a given genomic locus.
  2. An individual inherits two alleles, one from each parent, for a given genomic locus where such variation exists.
  3. If two alleles are identical, then the individual is homozygous for that allele.

Formation of new alleles:

  1. New alleles can be formed as a result of mutation, this is the final source.
  2. Mutations are permanent changes in the sequences of DNA.
  3. It is the first step in creating a new DNA sequence for a specific gene that makes up a new allele.
