Question

How are RNA primers removed?

Open in App
Solution

RNA primers:

  1. RNA primers are short stretches of RNA used to initiate replication and transcription.
  2. At the end of replication, the RNA primers are replaced by DNA fragments.
  3. During replication, the leading strand is synthesized continuously while the lagging strand is synthesized in the form of Okazaki fragments.
  4. The lagging strand has many RNA primers while the leading strand has a single RNA primer.
  5. These RNA primers are removed by DNA polymerase I and replaced by DNA fragments.
  6. These fragments are then ligated by the DNA ligase enzyme and form two daughter strands of DNA.
