How Are Xylem And Phloem Similar?

While the xylem is composed of dead cells with a thick cell lining, the phloem is composed of living cells, enabling the movement of food from leaves to other plant parts. Xylem has components – xylem fibres, xylem parenchyma and tracheids while phloem has the following components – sieve tube, phloem fibres, companion cells and phloem parenchyma.

While there are several differences, they possess similarities too, such as –

  • Xylem and phloem both are primarily involved in the movement of substances – water and food
  • Both these structures have vascular bundles – a conductive tissue in plants that helps them sustain in different conditions
