Question

How do fish take in oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

Breathing in fish:

  1. Breathing in fishes occurs through gills.
  2. Gills are the respiratory organs in fishes present in pairs of 4-7.
  3. Gills provide a constant supply of oxygen through the water to fishes.
  4. The operculum is the major respiratory structure known as the gill slit.
  5. The gill slits help the fishes to derive dissolved oxygen from the water.
  6. Hence, large quantities of water pass through the gills and mouths for absorbing adequate oxygen for respiration.
  7. The capillaries supplied in the gills helps in exchanging gases.
  8. The remaining carbon dioxide as respiratory waste is expelled out from the gills into the water.
