Genes are present on chromosomes and are the basic unit of heredity. Each individual has 23 pairs (2n = 46) of chromosomes, which they inherit from mother and father. Egg and sperm contain half (n) of the chromosomes, i.e. 23 and after fertilisation, the zygote consists of 46 chromosomes. So we inherit half of the genes from father and half from mother.
