How long does the luteal phase last?

Open in App
Solution

Luteal phase:

  1. The menstrual cycle occurs in four distinct phases- the menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase.
  2. It is the final phase of the menstrual cycle that begins on the 15th day that occurs in the female reproductive system.
  3. The egg is released from the follicle during ovulation and the follicle remains in the ovary.
  4. This follicle is converted into corpus luteum and releases progesterone and estrogen.
  5. This is important in order to maintain the uterus lining and to facilitate implantation.
  6. If the egg is fertilized and implantation occurs, the embryo secretes Human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) that in turn sustains the corpus luteum.
  7. If implantation doesn't occur, the corpus luteum deteriorates and the progesterone levels decrease.
  8. A decrease in progesterone levels induces shedding of the endometrial lining and causes menstruation.
  9. This phase lasts for 10-16 days during the menstrual cycle.
