How many subunits are 70s and 80s ribosomes composed of?

Open in App
Solution

Ribosomes:

  1. Ribosomes are organelles found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells that help in protein synthesis.
  2. They are also attached to the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotic cells.
  3. Eukaryotic ribosomes are called 80S ribosomes while smaller prokaryotic ribosomes are called 70S ribosomes.
  4. The 70S and 80S ribosomes both have two subunits.

70S ribosomes:

  1. They are mostly found in prokaryotic cells and a few in eukaryotic cells
  2. It is synthesized mainly in cytoplasm of prokaryotes.
  3. Its two subunits are 30S(smaller) and 50S(larger)

80S ribosomes:

  1. They are mostly found in eukaryotic cells
  2. They are synthesized in the nucleolus
  3. Its two subunits are 40S(smaller) and 50S(larger)
