How Megaspore Mother Cell Is Formed?

The megaspore mother cell arises within the megasporangium or ovule. One of the cells of the nucellus towards the micropylar region of the ovule differentiates into the megaspore mother cell or MMC. The cell increases in size and contains a dense cytoplasm with a prominent nucleus.

The process of formation of megaspores from the megaspore mother cell is called megasporogenesis. A megaspore mother cell is also called the megasporocyte and is a diploid cell in plants, which undergo meiosis and produces four haploid megaspores. In most plants, only one of these megaspores is functional and develops into an embryo sac or female gametophyte.
