Question
Is crossing over an enzyme-mediated process?
Open in App
Solution
Crossing over:
Crossing over takes place during pachytene of prophase 1 of meiosis 1.
The sites at which crossing over occurs are called recombination nodules.
It involves the exchange of DNA segments in non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes.
This is done by breaking and reuniting the chromatid segments.
This process is mediated by a multienzyme complex called recombinase.
It leads to the recombination of genetic material on the two chromosomes.
