The process of association of homologous chromosomes is synapsis. It occurs during the zygotene phase of prophase I of meiosis. This particular stage does not occur during the process of mitosis.
In other words, Synapsis occurs during meiosis, wherein the homologous chromosomes pair with their counterparts remaining bound as a result of the exchange of genetic information. Homologous chromosomes during meiosis are paired and then drifted to decrease the genetic material of the resultant gamete cells.
