Question

Is tap water ok for hydroponics?

Open in App
Solution

Hydroponics:

  1. It is a type of horticulture wherein plants are grown without soil.
  2. It uses water-based nutrient solutions in an aqueous medium to grow plants.
  3. It allows for faster growth and higher yields than soil-based growing systems.

Risks of using tap water for hydroponics:

  1. Tap water is usually chlorinated, which prevents the growth of microbes.
  2. This can be detrimental to the plants as beneficial microbes are removed as well.
  3. Some areas have hard water – and plants can have negative consequences if there is an overabundance of minerals in such water.
  4. Tap water that has undergone reverse osmosis, however, can be used.
  5. Distilled water is preferred for hydroponics due to its lack of contaminants.
