Solution

Eutrophication:

  1. During the process of eutrophication, water body gets gradually enriched by the nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus.
  2. This causes explosive growth of algae, leading to algae blooms.
  3. It causes a general foul smell, blocks sunlight and depletes the oxygen in the water body.
  4. It prevents the growth of aquatic plants and animals resulting to loss of ecological diversity.

Types of eutrophication:

  1. Natural eutrophication is referred as a process which occurs due to gradual buildup of nutrients and organic matter in water resources for a very long period of time. Natural eutrophication might take up to 100 years as the natural deposition and increase in organic matter deposition requires a long time.
  2. Anthropogenic eutrophication is referred as the process of accumulation of excess nutrients in water ecosystems due to human activities. It is also called as cultural eutrophication. It speeds up natural eutrophication leading to severe condition of water ecosystem within a very short period of time.
