What are recalcitrant seeds?

Open in App
Solution

Recalcitrant seeds

  1. These seeds germinate soon after they mature and disperse from the parent plant.
  2. During ex-situ conservation, recalcitrant seeds are seeds that do not survive drying and freezing.
  3. Because these seeds cannot resist drying or temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F), they cannot be stored for lengthy periods of time like conventional seeds because their viability would be impaired.
  4. Recalcitrant seeds are found in avocado, mangosteen, lychee, cocoa, rubber tree, numerous horticultural trees, aquatic plants like Nymphaea caerulea, and traditional medicinal herbs like Virola and Pentaclethra.
