Question

What are the different types of membrane transport?

Open in App
Solution

Membrane transport:

  1. Membrane transport refers to the movements of ions and small molecules through the biological membrane, which is the lipid bilayer in which the protein is embedded.
  2. The main types of membrane transport are as follows
    • Simple diffusion: In simple diffusion, small non-charged molecules or lipid-soluble molecules pass between phospholipids to enter or leave the cell, advancing from areas with high concentrations to areas with low concentrations.
    • Facilitated diffusion:It is a selective process, meaning that only specific molecules and ions can pass through the membrane.
    • Passive transport: Passive transport is a type of membrane transport that does not require energy to move objects in the cell membrane.
    • Osmosis: Osmosis is a special type of diffusion, i.e. diffusion of water in a semipermeable membrane.
