Question

What are the steps of Neurulation?

Open in App
Solution

Neurulation: is the process of formation of a neural tube that takes a hollow shape that differentiates the brain and the spinal cord of the Central Nervous System (CNS), the neural tube initially will be in a plate form and then later turns into a tube form that is a neural tube.

Neurulation occurs in the embryonic stage in that the first two processes are considered primary neurulation which is the formation and shaping whereas the third and fourth step which is grooving and neural tube formation is considered secondary neurulation.

  1. Neural plate formation: in this step the neural plate formation occurs inside the embryo by division of cells.
  2. Neural plate Shaping/Modelling: in this step the neural plate formed takes a definite shape or remodels to form a definite shape.
  3. The neural plate is bent to form neural grooves: in this step, the neural plate is bent to form grooves.
  4. Neural grooves are closed to form neural tubes: in this step, the neural grooves close to form a tube that is a neural tube.
