  1. Brown spot disease in rice is caused by the fungus Cochliobolus miyabeanus (originally Helminthosporium oryzae).
  2. Sesame leaf spot, Helminthosporiose, or fungal blight are all names for a brown spot.
  3. Seed infection results in seed germination failure, seedling mortality, and a reduction in grain quality and weight. In severe cases, yields are reduced by 50%.
  4. The disease begins as small brown spots and progresses to cylindrical, oval, and circular shapes. (similar to sesame seed).
