Question

What converts fatty acids to acetates in the process of bio-decomposition?

Open in App
Solution

Biodecomposition: It is the process of the breakdown of organic materials by the action of aerobic microorganisms.

Acetogenesis is the process through which organic acids (such as fatty acids) undergo reduction to produce acetic acid (or acetate).

  1. This involves the reduction of carbon dioxide rather than the oxidative breakdown of carbohydrates or fatty acids.
  2. Acetogens are a species of bacteria that are capable of undergoing acetogenesis. Eg. Clostridium aceticum.
  3. Acetogens are capable of fermenting fatty acids and converting them to acetic acid, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
  4. The carbon dioxide emitted is later reduced to acetyl-CoA.
