Down syndrome:

  1. It is a hereditary condition that is caused by the presence of an additional chromosome 21, also known as trisomy 21.
  2. It is often associated with physical retardation, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and facial features.
  3. However, there are numerous kinds of Down Syndrome, and the traits may vary depending on the type.
  4. Babies with Mosaicism (same person with different genetic makeup), for example, exhibit fewer indications and traits than those with trisomy 21.

Newborn babies with Down Syndrome may exhibit the following characteristics:

  1. Small head and ears
  2. Short neck
  3. Flattened face
  4. Small hands and feet
  5. Upward slanting eyes
  6. Presence of Brushfield spots
  7. Short fingers with short hands
  8. A deep groove exists between the first and the second toe.
