Chemiosmosis: Chemiosmosis is the passage of ions down an electrochemical gradient through a semipermeable membrane. Chemiosmosis is the process through which cells produce the majority of their energy.

It has the following characteristics:

  1. The electron transport system (ETS) is the metabolic mechanism that allows electrons to move from one carrier to another.
  2. It is found inside the mitochondrial membrane.
  3. It has the potential to power oxidative phosphorylation.
  4. The molecules in the chain include enzymes, protein complexes or proteins, peptides, and many other things.
  5. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is produced by the flow of hydrogen ions (H+) across a membrane during cellular respiration or photosynthesis.
  6. Because it produces the most ATP, chemiosmosis is the most critical phase in aerobic respiration.
  7. It produces 34 ATPs, whereas glycolysis and the Krebs Cycle produce just 4 useable ATPs combined.
