These are artificially constructed chromosomes by inserting a DNA segment from a bacteria, yeast, or virus into another host cell with the use of a vector (mostly a plasmid DNA that helps in carrying or transporting the gene/DNA of interest to the host).
These include yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs), bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs), and P1 bacteriophage artificial chromosomes (PACs).
These artificial chromosomes hold the DNA/gene of interest.
They are composed of:
an origin of replication
antibiotic-resistant genes
special chromosomal segments called centromeres and telomeres that are required for DNA replication in eukaryotes (eg: Yeast artificial chromosome)
