The three significant histological features of the ovary are –
- Cortex – comprises connective tissue stroma and many ovarian follicles. Each of the follicles comprises an oocyte which is surrounded by a layer of follicular cells
- Surface – is formed by the simple cuboidal epithelium. Under this layer is a dense connective tissue capsule
- Medulla – is formed by loose connective tissue and a well-developed neurovascular network entering through the hilum of the ovary
