The activation or awakening stage of germination is further classified into the following events-
- Water absorption
- Synthesis and activation of enzymes
- Cell elongation
In the synthesis and activation of enzymes stage, enzyme activity starts after hydration, rapidly. The action of enzymes is partially from the reactivation of the stored enzymes and partially by the synthesis of enzymes when the germination-initiation process takes place.
The hydrolytic enzymes convert complex food substances into simpler forms that readily can be absorbed and translocated by the embryo. Oxidative enzymes participate in respiration and release energy required for cell growth and division.
