Question

What happens to the solute potential if solutes are more?

Open in App
Solution

Solute potential:

  1. The amount by which water potential is reduced due to the presence of solute in pure water is called osmotic potential or solute potential.
  2. It is denoted by Ψs.
  3. When a solute is added to pure water, the free energy of the water molecules decreases.
  4. The osmotic potential of pure water is zero, thus it is always less than zero or negative.
  5. If the solute number increases then it results in a decrease in water potential which makes the solute potential negative.
