Hormones secreted by the kidney:

  1. There are three types of hormones secreted by the kidney.
  2. They are erythropoietin, renin, and calcitriol.
  3. Erythropoietin and renin are secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney which are peptide hormones.
  4. Erythropoietin production is stimulated by hypoxia.
  5. The renin secreted has enzymatic activity and is an important part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
  6. Calcitriol is a steroid hormone synthesized by the cells of the proximal tubules of the nephrons.
  7. It stimulates the formation of calcium-binding protein thereby increasing the intestinal absorption of calcium.

Hormone secreted by the heart:

  1. An atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is the hormone that is secreted by the human heart.
  2. Atrial natriuretic peptide is also called a ventricular natriuretic peptide which is secreted by the human heart.
  3. The function of ANP is to reduce the plasma volume by increasing the sodium excretion by the kidneys.
