Capacitation:

  1. Capacitation is a biochemical process occurring in the female reproductive tract, which enables sperm to fertilize an ovum.
  2. It destabilizes the acrosome membrane so that it can penetrate the egg and increases the motility of sperms by certain chemical changes in the tail.
  3. The changes occurring in the capacitation process are –
  1. In the cervix, seminal plasma is removed
  2. Uterine secretions cause the removal of cell surface
  3. In the oviducts, glycosaminoglycans and cholesterol are removed
