Question

What is the function of a polymerase chain reaction?

Open in App
Solution

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR):

  1. It is an experimental technique used to make multiple copies of a segment of DNA.
  2. PCR is highly accurate and can be used to amplify or copy specific DNA targets from a mixture of DNA molecules.

PCR amplifies the gene of interest in three steps:

  1. Denaturation of the target DNA (thermal cycle to separate the DNA strand),
  2. Annealing of the primer to ssDNA,
  3. Polymerization (extension of the primer to the complete strand of DNA).
