Solution

Liver in the human digestive system:

  1. The liver lies in the upper right side of the abdominal cavity just below the diaphragm.
  2. It is heavier in males than females. In males, it generally weighs 1.4-1.8 Kg, and in females 1.2-1.5 Kg.
  3. The liver is divided into two main lobes- right and left lobes separated by the falciform ligament. The latter is a membrane that is continuous with the peritoneum.
  4. The right lobe of the liver is further differentiated into the right lobe proper, a quadrate lobe, and a caudate lobe on the posterior surface.
  5. Internally, the structural and functional units of the liver are the hepatic lobules containing hepatic cells arranged in the form of cords.
  6. Each lobule is covered by a thin connective tissue sheath called the Glisson's capsule. Glisson's capsule is the characteristic feature of the mammalian liver.
  7. The mammalian liver also contains Kupffer cells that are phagocytic and eat worn-out WBCs, RBCs, and bacteria.
  8. The function of the liver is to produce bile that helps in the emulsification of fats.
  9. It is responsible to excrete cholesterol, bilirubin, drugs, and hormones.
  10. The liver detoxifies the blood and purifies it.
  11. The liver is the largest part of the human digestive system.
It is the only organ in the body that can regenerate efficiently.
