Question

What is the pathway of blood through the heart?

Open in App
Solution

The flow of blood through the heart of human beings:

The right side of the heart:

  1. Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium thru the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava.
  2. The tricuspid valve opens to allow blood to flow out of the right atrium to the right ventricle.
  3. When the right ventricle is filled it squeezes, which closes the tricuspid valve and opens the pulmonary valve.
  4. Blood flows thru the pulmonary artery to the lungs, wherein it receives oxygen.

The left side of the heart:

  1. Oxygenated blood travels out of the lungs to the left atrium thru pulmonary veins.
  2. The mitral valve opens to ship blood out of the left atrium to the left ventricle.
  3. When the left ventricle is completely filled it squeezes, the mitral valve is closed, and the aortic valve opens.
  4. The heart sends blood thru the aortic valve to the aorta, wherein it flows to the body.
