Lipids:

  1. Lipids are defined as organic compounds, that are insoluble in water.
  2. In the human body, these molecules are usually synthesized in the liver.
  3. They are composed of a phosphodiester group attached to a long fatty acid hydrocarbon chain.

There are generally 2 major types of lipids:

  1. Simple lipids –– Fats & waxes are eg. of simple lipids.
  2. Complex lipids — Phospholipids and sphingolipids are eg. complex lipids.

Significance of Lipids

  1. Lipids play a crucial role in the human body. They are the main source of energy, that provides energy & produces hormones in the body.
  2. They are structural components of cell membranes.
  3. These lipids are also involved in the cell signaling, digestion, and absorption of food.
