Question

Which is the back cross in the Monohybrid cross?

Open in App
Solution

The Monohybrid cross:

  1. When a dominant homozygous parent crossed with a recessive homozygous parent, with a single contrasting character, to get an F1 generation of hybrids which then crossed to get further generation, it is referred to as a Monohybrid cross.
  2. If the tall plant with genotype TT (homozygous dominant) crossed with the dwarf plant with genotype tt (homozygous recessive), then F1 progeny will be a Hybrid tall plant with genotype Tt.

The Back Cross:

  1. When the F1 generation is crossed with either of its parents, then the cross is referred to as the back cross.
  2. Here if a Hybrid tall plant (Tt) is crossed with a homozygous tall plant with genotype (TT) or homozygous dwarf plant with genotype (tt), then the cross is said to be a Back cross.
  3. The phenotypic and Genotypic ratio in backcross is 1:1.
