Why are cyanobacteria called blue-green algae?

Open in App
Solution

Cyanobacteria:

  1. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic creatures with only one cell(unicellular).
  2. Because they have both blue and green photosynthetic pigments, cyanobacteria are also referred to as blue-green algae.
  3. Chlorophyll is the green pigment and phycocyanin is the blue pigment.
  4. By using the process of photosynthesis, they are able to produce their own food.
  5. Some cyanobacteria can also fix nitrogen from the atmosphere.
  6. They are quite small and typically unicellular due to their microbial nature, yet they frequently form colonies that are large enough to be seen.
