Question

Why does spermatogenesis begin only after puberty?

Open in App
Solution

Spermatogenesis:

  1. In the seminiferous tubules of the testis, haploid spermatozoa develop from germ cells through the process of spermatogenesis.
  2. The stem cells near the basement membrane of the tubules undergo mitotic division as the first step in this process.
  3. During adolescence the brain releases GnRH.
  4. As puberty sets in, spermatogenesis begins in the male testis.
  5. They do not need viable sperm until they reach mid-post pubescence, which is why spermatogenesis does not occur before the start of puberty.
  6. Sperms can survive in the testes for 45 to 75 days.
  7. This ascent of testosterone permits the development of the tubules which then begins spermatogenesis.
