Why is the Amazon rainforest called the lung of the planet Earth?

Amazon rainforest:

  1. The Amazon rainforest is a moist tropical rainforest that covers most of the Amazon basin of South America.
  2. The human lungs absorb oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. Similarly, the Amazon rainforest absorbs the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen in a very large amount.
  3. It absorbs about 25% of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  4. It produces 6 per cent of total oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis.
  5. So, for these reasons Amazon rainforest is called the lung of the planet earth.
