Bones are dynamic structures adapting to their environment constantly and are vital for antigravity support, locomotion and other relevant processes. Osteogenesis is the process of bone formation.
The differentiating factor between the basal bone and the alveolar bone is that the basal bone forms the osseous tissue of the maxilla and mandible, the exception being the alveolar process. On the other hand, the alveolar bone is the bone that lines the alveoli.
Basal Bone
- The osseous tissue of maxilla and mandible is the basal bone which is not the alveolar process
- The supporting, connected part of the jaw is referred to as the basal bone
- It is found below the alveolar process
- The basal bone forms one of the 2 primary divisions in the mandibular body and develops in the fetus
Alveolar Bone
- The alveolar bone or the alveolar process comprises bone formed by cells from the dental follicle and cells that are independent of tooth development
- It is a thick ridge of bone containing tooth sockets
- It is seen on the jawbones that house the teeth. These bones in humans which contain the teeth are mandible and maxilla
- The curved part of each alveolar process on the jaw is the alveolar arch
Key Difference between Basal Bone and Alveolar Bone
The table below depicts the difference between Basal Bone and Alveolar Bone.

It constitutes one of the main portions of the osseous tissues of the maxillae and the mandible exception being the alveolar processes |
These are the bones lining the alveolus |
Takes form in the fetus |
Takes form from the follicle (dental follicle) |
Relatively larger |
Smaller in comparison to the basal bone, it is a fine plate of bone |
The length of this bone increases with time |
With age, these bones can be resorbed |
It provides a framework for the dental structure |
Renders support to the teeth |
