The differentiating factor between the muscular tissue and nervous tissue is that the muscular tissues are involved in the contraction of the muscles. On the other hand, the nervous tissues participate in controlling and coordinating the activities of the body through communication.
Muscular tissue
- Muscular tissues bring about the movement of different parts of the body and are typically attached to the bones, hence the movement
- The basic unit of the muscular tissue is the muscle fibre
- Muscular tissues are of three types – skeletal muscles, smooth muscles and cardiac muscles
- Skeletal muscles – these muscles have striations, hence are also referred to as the striated muscles. These are voluntary in action, attached to the skeleton and aid in locomotion. Their cells are cylindrical and long, having several nuclei. They can be seen in the muscles of the neck, face etc
- Smooth muscles – these muscles lack striations, hence are referred to as the smooth muscle cells. These are involuntary in action, regulated by the brain, and are involved in moving the material all through the body. The cells are spindle-shaped and have only one nucleus; these can be seen in the lining of uterine walls
- Cardiac muscles – these muscles are only seen in the heart, hence the name, and have striations. The cells are cylindrical and branched, having one nucleus. Their rhythmic contractions cause the pumping of the blood all through the blood vessels to different body parts.
Nervous tissue
- These are seen in the spinal cord, brain and nerves and are involved in regulating and coordinating the activities of the body
- It stimulates the contraction of muscles and makes one aware of his/her surroundings
- The neurons constitute the basic fundamental units of the nervous system, and communicate with one another through the electrical nerve impulses
- These neurons conduct and generate the impulses and have 3 main parts – the axon, dendrite, cell body
- Glial cells are the cells that do not transmit impulses but support the different activities of the neurons
