Hormones have a variety of effects and regulate different processes.
Plant and Animal hormones – The two hormones vary significantly in their chemical structures. While the plant based hormones are referred to as phytoestrogens and there is a huge variety of several types of phytoestrogens in the plants. Animal hormones are essentially less diverse, even in the number of their types. Structurally, they differ however, they can have some common components in their structure.

The significant difference is in their complexity, while plant hormones are simple organic substances, animal hormones are complex organic substances. Animal hormones can diffuse through the blood, while plant hormones diffuse through the phloem and xylem.
Plant Hormones
- Phytohormones or plant hormones are naturally produced in the plants, occurring in very little concentrations
- These hormones regulate all the facets of the plant related to the development and growth
- Each of the plant cells can produce hormones, unlike in animals wherein special glands produce hormones
- These hormones affect the expression of genes, cellular growth and division
- These are not nutrients, these are chemicals that in trace quantities facilitate and influences the development, growth and differentiation of cells and tissues
Animal Hormones
- Unlike the phytohormones or plant hormones, the animal hormones are produced in specialized structures – the hormone synthesizing glands
- Then the hormones are secreted from the glands in the bloodstream where it is transported all through the body
- In animals, factors like stress, minerals, infections influence their hormone levels
- The different structures – endocrine glands producing hormones are – hypothalamus, thyroid gland, pituitary gland, pineal gland, adrenal gland etc.
