The cranium comprises eight bones, including the paired temporal and parietal bones and the unpaired occipital, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid bones. The brain is surrounded and protected by the cranium, located inside the skull in the cranial cavity.
The facial bones shape the lower and upper jaws and support the facial properties. These are composed of 14 bones, including the unpaired mandible and vomer bone, and the paired palatine, maxillary, nasal, zygomatic, lacrimal, and inferior conchae. The ethmoid bone helps with the growth of the facial structures. The mandible and maxilla together form the lower and upper jaws, respectively. The tiny palatine bones that comprise the posterior half of the hard palate complete the broader anterior region of the hard palate formed by the maxilla.
