The adult human body skeleton comprises four basic types of bones:
- The long bone is long and thin in shape. Examples are the bones in the arms and legs (except ankles, wrists and kneecaps).
- Short bone forms a cubed, squat shape. Examples are the bones in the wrists and ankles.
- A flat bone has a broad, flat surface. Ribs, breast bones, shoulder blades, and skull bones are a few examples.
- An irregular bone is one whose shape does not fit any of the above three categories. Examples are the bones in the spine (vertebrae).
