The sternum or breastbone is a vertical bone that resembles a partial T-shape. It forms the front of the rib cage and is connected to the ribs by cartilage. It helps to protect the lungs, heart, and blood vessels from injuries. It’s one of the longest and largest flat bones in the body. The body, manubrium, and xiphoid process are the three anatomical divisions of the sternum.
The sternum is affected by a few congenital pathological disorders. They mainly refer to variations in sternum shape, which, in some circumstances, might impair organs within the thoracic cavity.
